Competition for the conversion of an historic building in Sants (Barcelona) into a public facility

The concept is based on the incorporation of a new item in the existing building. We have called "GRAFT", "plant resulting from the union of two or more different plants parts" to this new element of the building. The added piece includes circulations, toilettes and building installations.

The main entrance is through a multiple-use space: distribution, exhibition and information of the Centre's activities. The design aims to optimize spaces' flexibility and provide versatility, using mobile partitions, "expandable" and multipurpose spaces, so that the building may suit the needs of each moment.

The chosen solution is based on the integral conservation and restoration of the existing facade, following the requirements of the existing C level of heritage protection, with the recovery of the original design of the balcony. All interior partitions and the existing frameworks shall be removed. The most emblematic part of the building will be preserved: the roof structure formed by wood beams in good condition. The existing structure shall be reinforced.
The added space piece takes care of the vertical circulation and the connection between all levels. This element structures and rules the whole conversion, both formally and structurally.
