Ridaura public space. Competition for the development of a public space in Platja d'Aro. Mention
The competition organized by the City Council aims to develop a public space in the middle of a block in a residential area, close to the beach.
The presented proposal has as its starting point the concept of "woonerf", which we could translate as "residential street", but its nuances go beyond road traffic: it implies tranquility, coexistence, harmony with nature and pragmatic sustainability in the use of local resources.
The Dutch term woonerf literally translates as “living yard”; it is designed as a socializing space, a meeting place for neighbors, where children can play without danger, pedestrians and cyclists circulate freely, sharing space. It is a sector of public road where motor vehicles are allowed, subject to restrictions: LOW SPEED (at pedestrian crossings); LIMITED TRAFFIC (only private vehicles and small cargo vehicles); ADAPTED PARKING (not obstructive or invasive). If necessary, to fully enable the space, it is considered to modify the layout of the circulation area and its surroundings, adding vegetation, carefully chosen, in urban furniture; thus, ensuring its status as a RECREATION AREA.
The color scheme represents the mix of uses and the crisscrossing routes, in a single platform system for streets with priority for pedestrians. The internal path grid is like a large garden with a draining surface that helps reduce air and noise pollution, promotes biodiversity and improves stormwater management.
