Improvement plan for the coastal path from Platja d’Aro to Sant Antoni de Calonge - VIDEO

The municipalities of Calonge and Platja d’Aro have announced a joint roadmap to improve the coastal path that links the two towns. TV Costa Brava reports on the highlights of the plan.
The section that goes from Torre Valentina to Cavall Bernat is one of the busiest: in high season it is used by more than 10,000 people each year. The coastal path crosses a unique natural setting, with dirt paths, stairs, tunnels, rock points that surround impressive beaches and coves.
The route needs small improvements, such as fixing railings and steps or clearing the path of vegetation, but also more important actions, such as recovering the sections erased by the rise in sea level. In some places, the path is fragmented and has become impassable and dangerous.
The two town councils have drawn up a joint master plan that marks the points of the route where action is needed; the local councils will assume the cost of the works, but will also ask for the support of the administrations and the collaboration of campsites, hotels and other private owners.
The first diagnosis was commissioned from Jordi Marcè's architecture studio, which has identified the places where action is required and has classified them on a colour scale according to their importance. "There will be actions that can be carried out almost immediately; but there are also others, more strategic, that may require us to adapt our urban planning," says the mayor of Platja d'Aro, Maurici Jiménez. His counterpart in Calonge, Jordi Soler, recognises that although the control of the coastal path does not correspond to the town councils, "we are aware that we must make every effort within our reach to keep the heritage well preserved; we have the approval of both the State and the Generalitat, and we will not stop asking them for all possible help."
